What is the spell save DC for the spells gains via the dark gifts in Curse of Strahd? Ask Question. Asked 1 year, 2 months ago. Active 1 year, 2 months ago. Viewed times. For some of these spells, clearly a spell save DC isn't relevant, such as: mind blank X33b; North Sarcophagus or raise dead X33a; East Sarcophagus but for others, it is, such as: lightning bolt X33a; South Sarcophagus or suggestion X33b; South Sarcophagus but it doesn't seem to mention anything about a spell save DC for these spells anywhere, either in each specific dark gift's description nor in the general information about dark gifts in the sidebar on p.

OK so looking at the DMG about Charms: If a charm lets you cast a spell, you are able to do so without spending a spell slot or providing any components verbal, somatic, or material. Neat they don't need components, but doesn't help us. Below I will give suggestions and their reasoning. Use Any Existing Spellcasting Ability I would fall back on the default magic item rule: Pick any of your existing spellcasting ability scores.
Use Spell Scroll DC Looking at charms in general, they often grant temporary or permanent access to a magic item, without the physical item. As such it would be logical to assume charms granting access to spells could be considered access to spell scrolls and the ability to use them So it would be sensible to use the spell scroll DC for scroll that would allow access to that spell.
Use Charisma Spellcasting Ability Charisma is involved with the gifts already by their saves. Use Constitution Spellcasting Ability If you envision the gifts granted as enabling the PC to power the gifts through their own life force or energy, Constitution is also a valid ability score to associate with it, as it also is sometimes used with innate spellcasting.
Use No Spellcasting Ability Very technically, this is likely the "correct" answer. Improve this answer. Now one would anticipate that they would, but they should have had that ready when the A7 IV was announced. People asked for it and were told that was only for Cinema cams. But it's something they could have had there from the A7SIII release, but held back to encourage cinema camera sales.
No it's not a statement of fact. You wouldn't know a fact if it bit you on the nose, which is why you're forced to cite people like Thom Hogan or random scuba divers, who apparently know all about A1 battery life. The majority of still camera lenses suffer from focus breathing as it is not something manufacturers have ever bothered to correct for.
It is invisible in stills shooting. Canon RF lenses suffer from focus breathing every bit as much as Sony but for some reason you don't feel any need to mention this. If Sony are at fault for not offering software correction on all their models - what about Canon, who don't even have it on one?
Some videos of bad focus breathing from Canon RF. Camera companies amortize the development of tech across multiple models. Would make perfect sense for a high frame rate cropped version Z60 to appear using many of the same systems developed for the Z9. Just not immediately. But the Z9 at routines and EVF architecture would surely apply.
The ad results of Amazon never tend to represent the right product, i see z6 z7 and d6, but there's no z9. Throughout the history of cameras, the method of aiming the camera accurately and communicating its view to the operator is what has determined and defined most different basic camera types.
So it's appropriate and interesting that both Nikon and Canon in their latest top of their mirrorless line cameras decided to compete in part by improving the EVF experience considerably. In that regard they outshine their other competitor, the Sony A1, by a good margin. That article is from January , and was voicing a concern that was of major importance then, but isn't now; small, dark viewfinders. Not sure why you're dredged it up to aid in your Sony bashing, especially since the best viewfinder at the time the article was written was actually made by Sony:.
RubberDials: the main point is that the viewfinder is the main user interface for any ILC for most users. So yes, it's still that important. That hasn't changed. And so it's very significant that both Nikon and Canon have invested so much in their EVFs and its user experience.
What is old about the article is the idea that a Sony EVF was the best. It's great that Sony did this over 10 years ago; shame they don't do it now. They certainly don't have the brightest like they did then. And they engage in a shameful marketing of the EVF on their A1, citing specs that are not attained when the camera is being used for the high performance shooting for which it was designed. But as Thom Hogan writes so eloquently: ""Sony is the crowned king of footnotes to specs that dilute their impact.
I get that you hate Sony with all passion in life but facts don't cleave to your prejudice just because you want them too. Both the Sony and the Canon can show 5. In fact at fps the refresh rate became imperceptible to me and the closest I've personally seen to an EVF come to the fluidity of an optical viewfinder. Both have come out with superior EVFs. They show how in spite of the lower resolution spec, it offers a more pleasing experience than the A1 EVF. And the A1 EVF is absurd.
It will not achieve the top line resolution or even close to it, when you use it for what it's made for: high speed shooting with AF. That's what I call misleading marketing. It bears repeating, from Thom Hogan: "Sony is the crowned king of footnotes to specs that dilute their impact. Of course the comment by Gordon Laing isn't misleading, the Z9 is not the first camera with a 3.
What is misleading is your comments about the A1 EVF which are actually lies - the 9. Incidentally most people do review their images in the EVF, because it is the most detailed LCD on the camera - you just reveal you haven't shot with a mirrorless. RubberDials: sorry, the A1 doesn't offer you the full resolution when auto focusing Read the article: "That's because the Sony drops in resolution while you're focusing, regardless of what your display quality settings are.
Another A1 shooter on FM: "It is a bit annoying and I still don't fully understand what exactly causes the EVF quality to dip when the camera is focusing It still bugs me that with much-trumpeted processing power of the A1 it apparently still doesn't have the bandwidth to keep everything running at full speed when focusing. I've always found Sony's EVF design to exhibit a level of aliasing that I have not liked, but because of the quality difference this EVF on the A1 exhibits, I find particularly distracting.
Especially when I use a second body other than an A1. The A1 EVF doesn't live up to its specs. It's misleading for Sony to advertise that as some sort of attractive feature. Also, I'm sorry, most do not use the EVF to review images. It's unnatural and often awkward. Also you can't show the image to anyone who might be close by.
But given the substandard resolution of the back LCD of the A1, I get that you might want to promote that. The A1 drops to 5. You can also run the EVF in standard mode, which is constant 5. That is better than the Z9 in every parameter; more detailed, faster refresh rate and greater magnification.
Your attempts to ignore this are as bizarre as your attempts to claim that mirrorless users don't review their images in the EVF or show them to other people in that way - you just demonstrate your great unfamiliarity with these products. You have not! He seems to be under the impression that:. The market has the big desire to "finish" the DSLRs.
But we I am very happy with my D and buy used AF-D lenses from ebay that works great on it. No reason to move to mirrorless. This was of course due to the clustering of the AF points in the centre. Mirrorless has much more "spread" with these AF sensors. I pride myself on not taking the lazy way out with my shooting, but AF in such situations for me is an exception to that.
I so appreciate how my Nikon Z50 just nails it everytime. It was WAY too hard on my D You could focus everywhere with a dslr like you could do it with a film slr, like my canon t70! Focus with the central single focus point what yoy want , press the afl button , move the camera and take your picture!
It's not rocket science! We did that in 80's we still could do the same! Sure but our film SLRs had about 6mp worth of resolution, shooting portrait at f2. Although of course there are times when for ultimate speed of processing for deadlines etc. Cause lots of results look like JPEGs at the end of the day, so skip the middle man, least that's how some see it.
The answers about. I never wrote that I use. But the 35mm film could give much more than 6mp on a good scan. It gives around 24mp on a drum scanner. May be sooner than you'd think. It's not just losing numbers, they are losing numbers increasingly faster. Both can be true. Yes, DSLR sales are going down and mirrorless is taking over the market as far as new sales go. But DSLRs are still selling in substantial numbers, as pointed out.
But here's the kicker: you have all of those DSLRs from past years, when sales of cameras were far higher. It's just like cars on the road. Not every car is a new model year car Most are from prior years. Going back a while. So you still have a bunch of DSLR users out there. The latest market sales breakdown doesn't tell the whole story.
And that's not even counting the used market. Already in many market DSLRs are seen as the value alternative. Right now probably the largest pool of potential customers is the pool of people still using DSLRs.
Some of you are looking at this wrong. There are only 2. And around 5. DSLR sales are declining but last year Canon sold more DSLRs than anyone else sold mirrorless, and the way things are going it will be the same in Remember, last year mirrorless sales declined for everyone but Canon.
Everyone is seeing declines, its just that DSLRs are declining faster. But going by per-company, DSLR sales are still higher than mirrorless.
I would expect that you will be able to buy new in box DSLRs for a while at retail. And even if in 5 years no company makes any new DSLRs, that doesn't stop the already existing ones from working, or from being resold and purchased in the used market.
That's the point. DSLRs will be a presence in the world of photography for years to come, and certainly for more than the next 5 years. And at one point there were more Blackberrys sold than iPhones. And don't even mention Betamax.
Mirrorless is today's Blackberry. Smartphones are killing them and DSLRs off. My company made us use Blackberries long after iPhones became popular, but that didn't last. Before the iPhone, the BlackBerry was a nice profitable niche product, but most cell phones were the old fashioned "dumb phones.
For mirrorless to be like the iPhone, it would have had to have taken the entire camera market to new levels of sales. Camera sales would have exploded. But of course the opposite happened. Thanks to the iPhone and the world of smartphones it created, the camera market has cratered. Mirrorless is a very nice evolution of the ILC, but make no mistake: it is not the paradigm shift or revolution.
So yes, mirrorless is taking over the market for new camera sales. But that is not the world of cameras in actual use. The math is clear because so many more DSLRs were sold than mirrorless overall. There was a time when SLRs were the camera of choice only for journalists and serious amateurs - they had the appeal was that you could control every aspect of the process.
Most people didn't want or need that level of control and weren't interested in learning what you needed to know to take advantage of it. Smartphones are simply all that most people need or want, with just professionals and keen hobbyists wanting to use ILCs - and in the world away from these sites, that's a small minority. Smart phones are great image capture devices but IMHO very poor photography devices. The people who were buying cameras to capture images will use phones. The photographers will use cameras.
I am not even speaking about images quality, lens reach, speed, workflow. I am only speaking about shooting experience. But I still think the analogy doesn't hold up, because the iPhone did so greatly expand the market for smartphones. The iPhone was transformative to the entire smartphone industry, in ways that mirrorless will not be to cameras. And then compare to mirrorless average value too, if you want. If you further mix with CIPA's lens data, you'll find that these entry-level cameras are also associated almost exclusively with cheap kit lenses.
In other words, consumers who just want a "good" camera. So almost all of these DSLR sales are to users that don't additionally buy cameras or lenses. In other words, when saying "these DSLR users aren't going away soon," that almost exclusively refers to entry-level amateurs, not serious photographers. The person who is the most into photography that i know, still uses a 5D2 and 5D. Bodies don't get worse, new ones just get better, and lots of people have very little incentive to upgrade unless they have to, especially cause that money can be used on a lens, software, printing, framing, etc.
One of the very best I know still uses a 5D3. So sure there were a lot of entry level DSLR sold. But there were a lot of mid to high level DSLRs sold too, far larger than the market today.
The 5D2 and 5D3 almost for sure sold in greater numbers than any of the higher end mirrorless of today. Where I really saw them was at the end of the contest. So at the end of the football game, the Formula 1 race, the NASCAR race, when you saw a gaggle of photographers surround the contestants, virtually all you saw were 1D shooters snapping away. Change takes time and for many, as long as what they have works, the stick with it. Those DSLRs still work very well.
Once again: the numbers say that the high end DSLR user is now confined to a tiny, niche market that no longer buys new equipment. Because most higher end DSLR users already "went away" and moved their sales to mirrorless. So anecdotal evidence that people use these cameras on the sidelines is meaningless, because this conversation is about sales and not usage of past sales.
But for anyone starting out in photography a mirrorless camera can make sense. This is the camera I want. But I so far invested into the Sony System right now.
Maybe in the next couple of years. You can adapt the Sony lenses to the Nikon, at least. I think it was quite clever of Nikon to make their mount so as to enable the possibility. Not to nitpick, but "I think it's safe to say that the Z9 is Nikon's best camera yet of any type " needn't have been said. How could the latest-tech flagship is not a brand's best camera up to that point?
Well, the R5 seems like a much more appealing proposition than the R3 to give you one obvious example. R3 is better than R5 in every way except for resolution. If one can live with 24MP, it's better than an R5. Of course cost is a feature too. But this is the same dynamic that existed with the 1DX and 5D series for years Why not? At that level you need a second camera anyway. But the expected R1 should bring the resolution up as well to a stacked sensor body with all the goodies.
This entire post is specifically there to address the old argument that some aspects of the DSLR are superior, like the OVF and start up time. So there's a lot in the air from design inertia to human inertia competing what could be done with a ground up re-invention of cameras while at the same time understanding that much about DSLRs is that its the way it is because that's what works best for photographers.
Looks wonderful, but a camera with no shutter and no viewfinder blackout is DSLR like? Sounds a lot better. Blackout free is very nice. But someone pointed this out on a different forum and it makes sense: the DSLR OVF blackout is entirely predictable and is kind of like blinking with your eyes.
It seems more natural than any hiccups or smearing or artificacts that some EVFs may produce. Now it does seem that this Nikon EVF because it is so consistent and clear and bright may avoid the problems and shortcomings of most other EVFs, including the A1. EVF's have been my only reason to stick with my D I can't stand them. This could change my mind, although when placed in a Z-cheaper later. While this comparison gives Nikon the thumbs up, I assume that this is IOW: easy to reconfigure C even when not reconfigurable now, then at least in the very first firmware update Heavy investment in EF-lenses might count even more, or at least to a higher pecuniar degree, at least for now That tells me that they obviously want to appeal to their large base of DSLR customers who have yet to move to mirrorless.
Smart move. The fact that Sony didn't do this tells me that Sony is primarily trying to sell it to its current base of users. This too is a predictable and smart move, since you won't have that many switching systems any longer or many new entrants to the market.
Magic Lantern, are you listening? Do you have any real-world experience with RF lenses? The Canon RF f2. Overall, I'd say they're competitive without either brand having any clear "superiority. The RF mm f2. Indeed, I think it's a step forward to offer this type of functionality in an EVF. I love an OVF and I think sometimes we get tired of staring at various electronic screens. BTW, while it makes sense that Sony is not pursuing this line of EVF development, given their customer base, I wonder though if they didn't miss an opportunity.
I understand why they didn't. They didn't want to admit that any part of a DSLR was in any way better. There's something to like about each approach: resolution in the Sony, low latency and brightness in the Nikon, and novel focus initiation in the Canon.
It would be great to have all three features gathered together in one device, no? I think that is very much part of their business approach. Now I also think this will end up offering all users a better EVF experience. Sony has resolution in the nominal sense, but the resolution drops when using the camera at the performance level that most people buy it for. I would say that Sony goes for resolution in the marketing sense, but in reality, they have some issues to solve.
I think you characterize Nikon very well. As for the Canon eye control AF, to me that is they potential game changer. If it works as well as it seems, this could alter the way people interact with cameras into the future. Five years our so from now we could look back and see this as a milestone in the evolution of the camera.
Looks nifty I guess. I'm going to stick with my D and wait for the next iteration, D perhaps, with 96 meg censor? The odds that Nikon invests significantly in upgrading DSLRs going forward has dropped precipitously with the Z9 announcement. That means spring Why so? Because by then the mirrorless offering will be so obviously superior to the DSLR one that anyone not having migrated to mirrorless probably never will.
Who knows, some mirrorless users with remaining F mount lenses may even fall for it. Nikon is going to do very well. In the areas I work in, there is great potential for increased revenue from my clients. The IQ is on the level as the R5. But for most else give me the Z9 with more resolution and lower price. There is always some low level noise reduction on-going that cannot be deactivated. I personally prefer to have the freedom to decide myself how I reduce noise in shadows.
This is what raw is about for me. And the only noise reduction the R5 does at lower ISOs is in the darkest blacks. Read the threads on the subject in the science forums. Photography-lover is right.
Hmmm, I didn't know it was a mirrorless camera's job to be like the models it replaced. I like mirrorless because it isn't a DSLR. The advantages of mirrorless were not just the promise of size savings, but tech advancements, like silent shooting, the stacked sensor with ultra high burst rates, etc. BTW, if you are Nikon, and have a bunch of users still using anything from the D3 to the D6, and many using D8xx series gear, then it makes perfect sense to try to entice them over to mirrorless.
Also, Nikon has users of their Z system that want an even higher performance body. And who knows? They may even get a few who switched to Sony to come back to Nikon : Some former Nikon users have said all along that they prefer Nikon user experience but were waiting for this level of performance. With Nikon you see them prioritize user experience and real world usage over the spec sheet.
At first just going by the spec sheet it might seem lesser but in reality it is a greater performing EVF. This shows an attention to detail and refinement. With Sony we see them create an EVF with great top line specs but a whole lot of footnotes to that performance. It looks good on paper when they announce the camera, YouTubers run with that number, and everything seems great. But then in use you find out all of the exceptions, and that real world performance doesn't match up to the specs.
One obvious lesson is that sometimes these basic specs we obsess over are not indicative of real world usage. I did, and it has absolutely the best EVF on the market. Nothing comes close. The only footnote is that refresh rate goes down to when using hi-res mode - which is still MUCH faster than anything else.
I haven't used the Z9. However the author of this article has used both but, going back to the A1 after, they found it underwhelming by comparison so I am interested to try it, but I won't get hands on until next week.
Sony markets it as having a 9 million dot EVF. It is reasonable for people to assume that you will enjoy that resolution consistently when shooting images. You get that when you review images. But most do not use the EVF for image review. However almost all use the EVF when taking photos. It's obtainable at any time, whether you're shooting or reviewing the files. The only 2 footnotes on Sony's site are about the world's first Hz refresh rate which is true and the highest resolution in the industry at this time which is also true Thom Hogan: "Sony's use of a 9m dot EVF on the A1 remains the "top" specification out there, though few of us use it at the full resolution due to interaction with the frame rate.
When half pressing the shutter, the EVF goes down in quality where I see a distracting amount of moire and aliasing. You will only see 9. I think you probably also need refresh down at 60Hz and High Quality selected. I've noticed the resolution drop when actively focusing so I think that may be dropping to 3. My comment: so you have a camera that advertises 9.
That's very misleading advertising. Until you do you should probably chill a little. I'm pretty sure you'll be impressed by both Nikon and Sony and Canon if you get the chance, but for different reasons.
Everything I have seen and read about the Z9 suggests Nikon has applied an incredible understanding of shooter experience in designing this new flagship. Nikon has always been good at this with great ergonomics and menu layouts.
But Nikon appears to have gone to another level with the Z9. It would be great if you could remove the vertical grip when you wanted a more compact, lighter, pocketable setup.
This is a working camera. Not a show piece or a mantle sitter or vacation cam. It gets transported in a bag, comes out and works all day, goes back in the bag. There are other cameras from all brands that do that.
But if that is the only criticism that you can think of, then Nikon did something right. Nikon already has 7 Z-mount cameras without a grip.
I've preordered the Z9, but will still keep the Z7II since like it so much. DSLR mirrorless, because having the ability to make a small body that can be rigged up and broken down is unnecessary according to commenters.
Ordered a Z That's the truth But I do already have a Z50 - it was my "toes in the water" purchase. I'm actually looking forward to putting the diminutive on the Z9 and running in DX mode and to mounting the I've also ordered on the Z I hope so Add in better ergonomics, battery life, etc. For many, this is fine. For many pros and hybrid shooters, the integrated battery is exactly what they are after. You are silly. Pants, jacket or other.
To me that type of camera is out working. Not sharing space with pocket change. The title says it all Looks like one hell of a photographic box for a somebody making a living from capturing images, or simply people who can afford it and the lenses. I always thought that mirrorless cameras were to be smaller body objects and yet here we have body that seems to be rather 'big' even if lighter thsn its DSLR equilvalent. Perhaps later they'll produce a version without the second fixed grip and therefore a cheaper price.
Sure they would sell quite a few.. Good to see Nikon fighting back. Wouldn't it be boring if 'there canon be only one' were reality Size has its benefits. No reason to knock it. M black I'm not 'knocking' it I'm observing it And yes I'm not the target client As for who said or didn't say, well I'll have to take your word for it Ok if you thought that, but then think again, for a second: exactly where does ML save size? Actually, the Z cameras are all much smaller than their dslr counterparts.
Sensor size basically determines how small a camera-lens system can be. A Z9 is a pro camera which requires larger batteries, better heat control, larger and better buttons, all item valued by those who need that. Therefore it is a true blackout free finder with apparently record low lag. I love how Nikon has prioritised these things, looking at the entire chain and not just staring at paper specs like resolution. I think that Nikon designed the Z9 to answer one simple question: what does it take to convince the owners of the best DSLRs money can buy D and D6 to migrate to mirrorless?
This shows you that numbers are not everything. I think nikon might have addressed my biggest complaints about EVFs in general - they don't look natural enough. Blackout free was great of course, but it did feel isolated from reality. Brighter people can probably deal with this additional layer of abstraction than I could.
I am not smart enough to shoot Sony in its current form. I was very reluctant to move from optical viewfinder as i was used to medium format pentaprism. But i got very relieved when i tried the z6. No regrets. Recently even compared it with my old D, and i just found it like that: OLD. The z6 viewfinder looks good enough for me, with big magnification and good resolution. The thing is that i can "lock" the viewfinder, so it becomes insensitive to EV adjustments, that way behaves more like an OVF.
The advantages surpasses the disadvantages. They might have been in the past, no longer the case. And that's only in autofocus. Nikon's raws has always been better in comparison. But as i mentioned before, i can see its use case for video. I'm very excited to get my hands on this. I wonder if Nikon can enhance the experience even further with a firmware upgrade? To me the hdr experience in the viewport is a gimmick, because it will never provide with bright enough highlights at this moment of the tech.
In my opinion, i would rather ask Nikon to preserve viewport brighness to compensate with overwhelming exterior sunlight, no matter if dynamic range is a bit less extreme, as to me, finding the viewport "dark" is way worse than some clipping. That usability bit about viewfinder was clever.
It confirms what Nikon people have been saying about viewfinder experience to be natural- this was when they launched the Z series.
Looks like they know something about photography and don't get carried away but that is also the reason they lagged behind. Nikon from the start told us about the importance of optics in the EVF. But most YouTubers just read off the resolution spec and declare one better than another. That's just lazy reviewing. And this will be a test for the YouTubers. How many will take the time to do a review right, and point out what the authors of this article did I don't remember many saying, well that 9 million dot number seems impressive, but you only get that in playback mode?
When shooting you don't really get that. And the way it jumps around makes it look worse. I don't remember many YTers saying much about that.
That's a fail on their part. As a Pentax shooter, one of the things I appreciate is their concentration on user experience over headline specs and yes, Pentax cameras do have shortcomings in user experience with regard to a few, well-documented areas, but that's not due to lack of trying : - and one of the things that appeals about this camera is that the philosophy seems similar - make a camera that offers the best shooting experience possible for its target customer - I really do wish Nikon well with it.
