Trophies are great, but having touched someone musically is a whole lot better. That it sounds like a big bomb going off is. However, he also understands how to use dynamics and does so very effectively. Honestly, the reason I do single-stroke rolls and flams is because of my learning to play the drums on pillows, with no resistance.
That way I can hit harder and put more weight into it. I get goose bumps when I hear his playing. I think that Tama may have corrected the flaw but, at the time, it was as if the cymbals would cut right through the metal at the top of the stand.
Dave, on two occasions, hit the crash so hard that the top of the stand cracked off and the cymbal came flying into his lap; it looked like some kind of practical joke, but it was real. Pedal DW Turbo Dalke: Pretty much every piece of the pedal broke at different stages of the tour. I was brought in because I had worked with Josh Homme before.
I knew either way Dave was going to love the gesture of us doing the kit for him, and he was so excited when he first saw it. We had a lot of big drums and the way Dave plays he sets up a lot of sections with that first rack, so I wanted a fundamentally higher note.
We also have a great, specially made, 20" Effects crash, which sounds really good because of my theory of things exploding and dissipating really fast. So I designed these little concert toms, DW made them, and we just painted them black. And then he wanted a wood block, so I literally made him a block of wood from two-by-four, painted black!
He walked on stage, dumped water all over his head - which went all over the kit - and proceeded to play like an animal.
